September 2005
Dear Family and Friends,
Last month, while on vacation with my parents, my first blood glucose meter ran out of strips as planned. However, when I tried to use my second meter, it didn’t work because the battery had died. Unfortunately, where we were located, we couldn’t get to a pharmacy until the next day. I panicked and really got concerned about testing my sugars. The next day, we were able to get batteries for one meter and extra strips for the other meter. But after going through this experience, it hit home how much I really want a cure for this disease. I am afraid that if research is not financed and a cure discovered soon, I could develop one or more of these diabetes complications: heart attack, stroke, neuropathy, kidney failure, retinopathy, or early death.
JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) is an organization dedicated to finding a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications. For the past three years, we have been actively involved with JDRF. In fact, this year, I was appointed one of two Youth Ambassadors for the Greater Los Angeles Chapter Walk to Cure Diabetes. And my dad has just been elected to the Executive Board of the Chapter. We also attend JDRF events such as research updates, support groups, and galas. This organization is on the front line of making a difference and there has been a lot of good news this year. JDRF recently set themselves a goal of raising $1 billion over the next 5 years, an increase over their prior goals.
We need your help to find a cure for this disease. As you may know, we are the leaders of Jessica’s J-Walkers, a team involved in the Walk to Cure Diabetes for the past two years in which we raised almost $70,000 all together. Our goal this year is to raise $40,000 with help from donors and walkers like you. Our team will be walking at the Santa Monica Beach on the morning of Sunday, October 23, 2005.
We are also pleased to be able to send a JDRF Find a Cure wrist band to anyone who donates at least $50, and asks for one!
THE WALK IS A GREAT SCHOOL COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT AS WELL!
