Dear Friends and Family,
About 1 ½ years ago, when I was 10 ½ years old, I found out that I had a terrible disease: type 1 (“juvenile”) diabetes. After hearing of this, my immediate reaction was: How will this change my life? During my stay in the hospital and during the past 1 ½ years I have discovered just what it means. This disease adds a ton of extra responsibilities to my life. These include pricking my finger with a small needle to test my blood sugar 6 to 8 times a day and giving insulin through injections or the pump.
No matter how hard I try to control this disease, there are still things that could happen to me. I could develop one or more diabetes complications. These include heart disease, stroke, blindness, nerve disease, kidney disease, foot problems, gum disease, skin problems, and early death. But I work very hard to prevent any of these things from happening to me.
A cure for this disease is within reach, but scientists still need a boost to get there. With the new developments in stem cell research, a cure is more attainable than ever before. My parents and I have decided to donate money for the second year in a row through the Walk to Cure Diabetes that the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) is holding on Sunday, October 3 in Santa Monica. The JDRF is the largest worldwide organization completely dedicated to finding a cure for type 1 diabetes through extensive research. In fact, nearly 85% of every dollar donated to the JDRF is used for research and education about research. Since 1970, the JDRF has provided over $600 million to type 1 diabetes research worldwide.
Our local chapter is the Greater Los Angeles Area chapter and we are involved in a few ways. First, my parents were on the Pier Party committee. Second, I sang in a choir at the gala in Beverly Hills where Nancy Reagan spoke. Since we raised nearly $40,000 at last year’s walk, we have decided to really challenge ourselves and increase this year’s goal to $50,000.
In order to reach that goal we need your help. There are two ways you can help our walk team make a difference for type 1 diabetics everywhere:
· You can walk with our walk team, called “Jessica’s J-Walkers”, on October 3, 2004 in Santa Monica. Our team consists of family and friends who walk and collect donations.
· Second, you can send a tax-deductible donation of any amount, made payable to the JDRF or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Thanks for your support of this worthy cause. We hope to see you on October 3 or receive your letter in the mail. Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Jessica Shapiro
