2007 JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes

September 2007

Dear Friends and Family,

2007 marks Jessica’s J-Walkers fifth walk year (and my fifth year living with diabetes). We would like to thank everyone who helped us raise over $180,000 in the last four years. We walk in support of JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), whose mission is to cure type 1 diabetes and control complications. Since this is our 5th anniversary, we are going to step up our game and raise our goal to $75,000 and 120 walkers. This is a real challenge and we need everyone’s help to achieve it. Thank you in advance for your participation.

To show you what your support has achieved, we would like to highlight some of the advances in research and technology that JDRF has made over the past 5 years.
* New insulins include Lantus, which works as a base dose for 24 hours and mimics a normal pancreas’s actions. Another remarkable breakthrough is inhaled insulin (now approved for adults over age 18), which eliminates the need for multiple daily injections or pump therapy.
* Insulin pumps now include new features such as alarm clocks, daily averages, and dose calculators. These features add to the already elevated flexibility of an insulin pump compared to daily injections. Like Lantus, pumps also mimic normal pancreatic secretions.
* A new therapy called CGMS (continuous glucose monitoring system) allow for blood sugars to be automatically tested every 5 minutes by a sensor placed beneath the skin. This therapy allows for even tighter control of blood sugars, thereby delaying and preventing diabetes complications.

However, there is so much more scientists and researchers are capable of developing and discovering. Diabetics everywhere are looking forward to a closed-loop system that tests blood sugars and adjusts insulin dosages based on these results – all automatically. The person with diabetes would have even less to worry about with this system. Scientists are also in the process of investigating why and how type 1 diabetes develops in certain people. However, for investigations to continue, more funding is needed.

And that’s where you come in. We need your support to reach our goal of $75,000 and get one step closer to curing type 1 diabetes. There are 2 ways you can help.

· Make a donation to JDRF.
· Walk with our team in and around Dodger Stadium on Sunday, November 4, 2007 and raise money from your own circle of friends and family to contribute even more to JDRF.

· Donate online or sign-up for the walk, go to http://www.jdrf.org/ and search for “Jessica Shapiro” or use:
